Special Time <3

Gabriella and Kasey both nap at the same time in the afternoon, but Tomas has outgrown his afternoon nap. On school days he has to have "rest time" upstairs for quiet activities, but on days like today, I get him all to myself...special Mommy and Tomas time! It is nicer outside today than we expected. First we went for a walk...doing silly walks first and then ending it off by holding hands and strolling along. Then, because Kasey and Gabi were still resting, Tomas got out his bike and we headed for the playground (the only route we can take without hitting a big hill). He practiced using his hand brakes and at the playground we climbed together and he even worked on tackling the hanging ladder. These are such precious times!
Now we're headed back home to play swords. "Mommy, let's go!"

First Adventure with Three

Thursday was officially the first day Peter had to go back to work, and therefore also the first day that I had to get Tomas off to school by myself. It was hectic, but we managed to get to school only about 2 minutes late. I was pretty proud of myself. Everyone (including myself) was dressed and clean. Kasey was totally content, even sleeping, in his car seat.

After dropping off Tomas, Gabriella, Kasey, and I went to Target to grab a few things we needed (and look for a tree topper...my advice, don't get one at Target). With Gabriella in the front of the cart, and Kasey in the main compartment, there wasn't much room for anything in the cart. A natural way to curb easy overspending that can happen at Target, perhaps? Gabriella was a model child and Kasey just continued to sleep. Wow, I just knew my luck would run out soon! After sharing some girl time at Starbucks (the one in Target, come on, we live in Newburgh, that's as fancy as it gets), it was time to head out.

Upon getting everyone settled in the car, I checked the clock and realized we were going to be pretty early for picking up Tomas if I went straight there. However, going home and getting out of the car for the perhaps fifteen minutes we would be at home seemed like an impossibility, so I made the choice to head to school and wait in the parking lot. Well, this is where the real adventure begins. I managed to get Kasey out of his car seat without actually taking him out of the car and proceeded to feed him in the front seat. I also unbuckled Gabriella so she could have a bit of freedom. Kasey needed to be changed (twice), and ate on the other side. HE seemed pretty content, just as Gabi announced, "Mommy I need to go potty." Thank goodness for small miracles, the portable potty was within arms reach. I laid Kasey down in the passenger seat (I know, not mom of the year material, but I didn't have many choices) and set up the potty. It was, of course, a bit too late already, so I had to change Gabriella's underwear too. Now it was time for me to get out of the car and sign out Tomas. Kasey was content but hardly dressed to brave the cold, and Gabriella was out of her seat and had no shoes on. What now!? Again, small miracles. My neighbor stopped by the car at that moment with a few hand-me-downs for Gabriella. Since she hadn't held Kasey yet, she stepped into the car to snuggle and I hopped out to get both of our kids from the teacher.

Wow, we made it through the morning!!!!

Welcome Little Dude

What an entrance Kasey Richard Pedraza has made into this world! He was determined to be on time in his appearance, waiting until the last few hours of his due date to join us.
I had progressed to 4 cm by Thursday at my doctor appointment, so the doctor suggested heading out to walk and then heading in that afternoon sometime to get things moving along. Being the diligent patient, I headed out for an afternoon of walking with Peter. After all that, I was having contractions, but they were staying at about 8-10 min apart. As bed time neared, we made the decision to stay at home and try to get some sleep instead of waiting out the night in a hospital bed.
Much to my frustration, I got a good nights' sleep. While I am thankful to get that, it was also frustrating to find that my contractions had seemed to quit once again over night. As we got our day started and Oma took the kids through what is normally my routine with them, contractions seemed to resume and this time with a greater frequency, although still at a moderate pain level. Nonetheless, I made the decision to go in and see where this would go.
Upon arriving at Labor and Delivery, we were told, "Oh, you were the one Dr. Munzer called about yesterday. We were waiting for you all day.". Oops. Busted...it turns out al is ok, though, as L&D had been busy that day. We were shown to a Labor and Delivery suite and started to get settled in a room with phenomenal views of the river, Bannerman Island, and West Point. When the doctor came in to check me. I was unpleasantly surprised to learn I was still at 4 cm. Time for more walking and waiting; except this time through the short L&D halls.
Just a short while later, it was time to be checked again, and I was already at 6 cm. Yahoo! They started getting me admitted and I was excited to keep things moving along. Contractions continued and my water hadn't broken so we continued to walk as the pain was more bearable that way.
And then...several hours later I was stuck between 6-7 cm and the contractions had slowed. What?! Oh man! The doctor then decided breaking my water and a slight dose of petocin were in order. I braced myself. The petocin made contractions so intense with Tomas and breaking water also makes everything intensify. Needless to say, this not so little guy was with us within 2 hours of that moment.
At first when the petocin started, the intensity increased but I was determined and declined the epidural (Pete was SO supportive in this and kept putting off the decision for me. We had talked about it before, and I wanted to be able to accomplish this naturally. Everything got really intense really fast and I was truly feeling like I couldn't handle more while waiting for my cervix to finish dilating. The doctor, however told me there was only a rim of cervix left. We were past the point of no return. I was doing this naturally.
And so I did. Kasey Richard Pedraza was born at 9:54 pm at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh, NY. He entered the world face up, which, according to my doctor, is about the equivalent of delivering an extra pound (ouch!!). He weighed 9 lbs 4 oz and was 22.5 inches long. He was my biggest baby by far. My most vivid memory of the whole labor was how incredibly warm he was when they placed him on my stomach after he was born. I completely bonded with my new little man at that exact moment.

Whoa Baby!!!

It's hard to believe, but I'm officially in my third trimester with Baby Boy Pedraza (Who still has no name...Aaaaahhhh!!!). I had a doctor's appointment on Friday and upon leaving, I was told it was time to start 2 week appointments. What?!?! Oh man, this baby is already here. I'm excited, I'm worried, I'm freaking out!

Just 10 more weeks to spend time with Gabi before she becomes the "middle child." Tomas handled his little sister so smoothly. Gabriella is such a different child!! I sense a period of rebellion coming on with her, and it makes me oh so nervous! This, of course, is also the moment when I smack myself and say, "Stop being so pessimistic." But, the crazy preggers hormones think otherwise!!

On another note, today I clearly felt our new little guy's foot digging into my hip. It was the first time in any of my pregnancies that I was positive I was feeling a foot. In the past, I've always thought it was so amazing how women are able to say, "Oh, there was a foot." How do you know it's a foot, not a hand or a bum? Like I said, it was always a mystery! Today, however, I just knew it was a foot. So neat!!!

Hershey, PA Weekend

We had such a fabulous time this past weekend in Hershey, PA, exploring and enjoying!
We arrived late Friday night after a harrowing drive through rain and some nasty fog!  Saturday morning, everyone slept in, and we spent the day at Chocolate World and Hershey Gardens.  Luckily, Chocolate World was inside because oh boy was it cold!!!  We had to go on the chocolate tour twice because the kids liked it so much, and they got an opportunity to "make" their own box of Hershey Kisses.  We met up with the Naftals, neighbors from down the street and headed down to Hershey Gardens with them.  The tulips were gorgeous and the kids were able to run around, but the wind made it just plain cold!
Saturday was the day to head to Hershey Park, an amusement park, where they were having a military day. Tomas and Gabi were both "under 3" for the purposes of admission (saved us $25). Both Gabriella and Tomas were able to go on rides at the park, and the weather was insanely better than yesterday. Coats were still a must, but the sun was shining on us and inviting us to have some fun. Both kids loved the rides...I had to sit on the sideline most of the day (pregnant ladies can't even ride the kiddie rides). Tomas even got the chance to ride his very first roller coaster. He was all smiles before (as you can see in the picture), but told me it was scary afterward. My friend Heather said that he wanted to go again after the ride was over, though, so I think there is no reason to think he will shy away from thrill rides in the future. My favorite part of all the rides was that Tomas said his tummy felt funny on the frog ride. Too cute!

Meeow!!!

Time to let the cat out of the bag: I'm preggers!  Baby number 3 is due November 19 (to share a birthday month with Oma and Grammy and her late overgrootmoeder!)
As of Friday I will be 10 weeks along, and the first trimester is definitely kicking me in the bum (as we say around here).  Luckily I have yet to puke (yes, that's quite an accomplishment in my pregnancy world), but in the last week, my appetite has plummeted.  Lunch is ok, but breakfast and dinner are just ick.  Fruit is all I want to eat (really really need to do groceries tomorrow). I suppose that's a heck of a lot better than wanting ice cream and burgers, right?
Mostly, I'm just TIRED!!

Beautiful day HA

Yesterday was a nice spring-like day, and then I woke up today and BOOM...freezing!!!  Come on spring, don't tease me like this!  Tomas didn't want to wear his coat when we left the house because he thought it would be like yesterday.  Boy, was he in for a surprise.  He bolted back in the house and put on his coat.
On a positive note, I LOVE when the kids are happy in the morning.  It makes suhc a difference in my day.  Both kids were singing and dancing and having a grand time with their waffles, strawberries and bananas.  I didn't even worry about being late for school.  Who can break up such joy?

Boo

I am feeling sad and frustrated this morning. I very enthusisatically told of that Military OneSource position I interviewed for, and I really truly was enthusisatic about it, but this morning I received the news that I did not get the postion. I'm so bummed because the position really was perfect. It offered flexibility, and the job was just right up my alley. The position more or less fell into my lap and now I'm half wishing it never had. Although I realize that this reaction is somewhat childish, I'm really just feeling disappointed at a missed opportunity.

On a positive note, I'm excited to see the sun out today. Maybe that and having my mom here will make everything look better.

Craziness

The weather is still awesome! Here we come spring! Mostly, though, I'm exhausted today! I could not sleep last night and Gabriella was up multiple times with an earache. Needless to say, I think I need a coffee IV today.

New Possibilities...

This morning I had a second interview for the Outreach Assistant job with Military OneSource. (I interviewed with them originally at the end of January.) It's been so long since that first interview that I had pretty much given up on them. Then last week I got an e-mail from one of their liaisons asking to schedule a second interview. It wasn't even really what you could call an interview. She mostly just told me more about the position and that I would hear back by the end of the week whether I got the position.

I am still really ecited about the whole thing. It is right up my alley: giving briefs and trainings, and setting up tables at conferences. I'm thrilled about the possibilities (and the pay is great!).

Dutch Cooking...

This week I've cooked a Dutch Meal twice. Andijvie met spek (one of my all time favorites) and pannekoeken (my comfort food). It's nice to share these things with the kids and hopefully connect them to their heritage.

Andijvie met spek is a traditional Dutch mash meal. We like to make meals where we throw everything in one pot and enjoy! This particular one is mashed potatoes with raw endive (I used Belgian endive, but what I'm used to is a bit greener and more curly than this) and yummy cooked bacon. Add a little salt, pepper, and nutmeg and YUM YUM. The texture of the raw endive is a bit different, and the kids weren't too sure about it. A little enticement in the form of dessert helped significantly, and Tomas actually admitted to liking it. Gabriella is still in the stage where raw carrots are a texture issue, so she remained a little resistant, but bacon helped ease the strangeness for her. She truly is a "meatatarian." Silly girl.

Pannekoeken literally translates to pancakes, but it is really somewhere between a crepe and an American breakfast pancake. That, and we eat it for dinner, not breakfast. Pannekoeken plain with syrup, pannekoeken with bacon cooked into them, pannekoeken with cheese, pannekoeken with tomato and cheese. YUM YUM. The kids devoured this without a problem. I haven't had them try the ones with cheese or with tomato ,but I loved them growing up and I'm sure the kids will too.

What an insane and exhausting day this has been! Tomorrow is going to be yet another long day. The last two mornings I have woken up very tired, and it just seems to hang with me. Maybe we should stop being addicted to Dexter. Damn Netflix!

What a day!!

I'm already exhausted. Tomas had school in the morning, so Makayla, Gabriella and I ran some errands so that we'd have enough food in the house for the weekend. Gabriella and Makayla tramped throught the grocery store holding hands and grabbing for kid-height, interesting foods and toys. TIRING!!! Luckily they were overall well-behaved and we had a good time.

When we got home from school, Everyone was falling asleep in the car and I KNEW I was in trouble! As usual, Makayla didn't want to eat lunch; I at least got her to eat some turkey. Gabriella has been a sneezing snotty mess all day. Nap time was a DISASTER. Makayla was crying, but eventually just fell asleep. Gabriella was just all out screaming. She can't breathe through her nose and she was just lying there pointing to her nose and saying Mommy in a whiny voice. (She was also very interested in seeing our neighbor Jenniene, who was downstairs with her nephew and Tomas. So far, Makayla is the only one that has napped. She is here until after 8 tonight and then again tomorrow morning with her brother. I just want to SLEEP!

A Bad Start!!

Last night when I came in from the wives' coffee in our neighborhood (where I learned how to crochet), I opened the other garage door instead of closing the one that was already open. This resulted in an animal coming into the garage to snack on the pizza that was in our "cold storage..."that means in the garage since it's like a refrigerator in there anyway. Man, what a discovery to wake up to. DIG DUMBY ME!
On another note I actually completed a scarf for Gabriella's dolls. I realize that is a small tiny little thing, but for anyone who has ever attmepted crocheting, hopefully you understand that I am proud of this. I am now going to move on to a scarf for myself and hope that it does not look as funny in spots as the baby scarf does. HA!

After the storm...getting back to it.

Today is just one of those days in the Pedraza house. First, I was wide awake at 7 (plenty of time to shower and get the kids up and fed before school), but my smartness decided to doze: just for a little bit. At 8: 10 I woke up. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH (We have to be out the door by 8:45). Both kids were still asleep, and boy was I ever little miss groggy face. A quick dunk in the shower and then I quickly dressed Gabi, who thankfully decided to cooperate today. Then we went into Tomas' room together. He was soaking wet. He hasn't had an accident at night since August. This had come out of nowhere. A quick bath, getting dressed, and we ate leftover pancakes in the car on the way to school. What a way to start the day. I hate being rushed!

On the way to school, we discussed what we saw outside, and boy was there a lot to see! Tree limbs werre downed all over the place from all of the wind and snow, and the piles of snow were enormous. Just by Tomas' school, whole trees had even fallen! We were, inevitably, late for school. Tomas sat down and started work on the letter "O." As I went to leave, Gabriella very plainly told me, "Don't want to." (Mind you, I understand what she says quite clearly, but as Selene attested to last weekend, I am often alone in understanding her).

Quick side note, right now Tomas and Allie are playing together. Tomas just informed me that he is Bo, Allie is Carla, and they are playing with Max, who has "twitty" legs (Allie said pretty, but it sounded like "twitty" so Tomas has added this to his vocabulary). They just ran into the playroom to hide from Max. I haven't a clue where Tomas got those names, but he is committed to them. Even as he was running, he called Allie Carla.

Back to my day: Gabriella is quite an independent little lady but does not quite understand the dangers of parking lots. This is leading to some fun and frustrating times. She insists on walking, but it always takes some time to get her to hold my hand. Her favorite phrase lately is, "Leave me alone!" (This sounds something like "LEELONE!"

All in all, it was a quick morning. It is already 2:30, and as I look around, I feel like I haven't gotten anything done. Laundry is multiplying exponentially. Everything that was folded is now in "neat" little Gabriella mounds, and somehow I have to hope the kids sleep so I can call USAA at some point.
